Who is Jemima Puddle-duck?
Jemima Puddle-duck is a friendly but silly duck from “The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck,” a children’s book written by Beatrix Potter. Composed at Hill Top in the Lake District, the book was her first on the farm. In fact, background illustrations in the book are from buildings, yards on the farm and nearby locales.
The story of Jemima Puddle-duck begins in a farmyard. White in colour, the duck often wears a blue poke bonnet and pink shawl. She wants to hatch her own eggs, but the farmer’s wife thinks ducks are poor sitters, unlike chicken. Depressed, Jemima Puddle-duck tries to hide her eggs after the farmer’s wife repeatedly takes them and gives them to the hen to hatch.
She meets a Foxy Whiskered Gentleman, a fox who tricks her into laying nine eggs. The Whiskered Gentleman suggests they have a dinner party and ask Jemima Puddle-duck to collect seasonings. Jemima is not aware that he plans to eat her. Luckily, Kep rescues her from Gentleman but not before the foxhounds eat her eggs.
