How to Ease a Sore Throat with Marshmallows
Sore throats are extremely painful. You may feel scratchy, irritated, mild discomfort or burning pain. This pain worsens when you swallow.
Most sore throats are usually caused by viruses such as the flu or cold virus. Other causes include pollution, mould, allergens and smoking.
To soothe a scratchy throat, most people gargle warm salt water. Some suck on an ice pop while others sip herbal teas with honey. In 2020, over 5.68 million people in the UK used sore throat remedies three to four times a day. A further 6 million used sore throat remedies twice a day or less.
While all these remedies will soothe the inflammation and relieve your sore throat, there is one more remedy – marshmallows.
Marshmallows can soothe your sore throat. For centuries, people have been using juice from the marsh mallow plant for pain relief. In fact, in the 1800s, people mixed juice from the marsh mallow plant with sugar and egg whites.
They gave children the mixture to relieve pain associated with a sore throat. This recipe was so tasty that people gave it the name “marshmallow.” Today, it’s one of the most popular snacks.
Marshmallows that provide relief for a sore throat are fat-free or sugar-free (with zero grams of saturated fat per serving.).

What you’ll need
- A bag of marshmallows (fat-free)
To soothe your sore throat, refrigerate a few of the marshmallows for a couple of hours. Once the marshmallows are cold, take three or four and eat them. This should soothe the pain associated with a sore throat.
The reason why marshmallows work is that they contain gelatine. Gelatine makes the marshmallows soft, which is good for the sore lining of your tonsils and larynx. Rich in protein, gelatine has a unique amino acid profile. It coats your throat, soothing the inflammation and irritation.
