Save Money by Buying Food Past it’s Best Before Date

All food that you buy will have either have a use by or best before date on the packaging. There is a crucial difference between these two terms and knowing this difference can save you from throwing food away when it would have been fine to eat it. A use by date is often found on chilled food such as dairy products and meat. You should not eat food that has gone past its use by date, even if it looks and smells fine.

Some food with a use by date can be frozen. As long as it is frozen by the date on the packaging, then it will be OK to eat this after the use by date. You will still need to make sure you follow the instructions on the packaging such as whether the food needs to be defrosted before cooking.

In contrast, a best before date indicates when a food is at its best. It can still be eaten after this date, there just might be a reduction in quality. However, in most cases this is something that is barely noticeable. Over time the texture and flavour of the food might change, but in most cases it will still be edible.

Is Food Past Its Best Before Date Safe To Eat?

Food that is past its best before date is absolutely safe to eat. If there were any ingredients in the food that could cause issues, then it would be marked with a use by date. The best before date is there so you know when the quality of the food will be the highest, it is nothing to do with the safety of the food.

Overview…

We save a lot of money by buying food that is past its best before date. Prices are usually considerably cheaper and there will be hardly any difference in the taste. Buying food that has gone past the best before date also helps to reduce food waste. It is estimated that over 7 million tonnes of food that is wasted in the UK every year. This could be reduced if food that was just past its best before was eaten instead of being thrown away.
