Since the emergence of Coronavirus, many schools have been closed and parents have to find the best ways teach their Children at home so they don’t fall behind with the national curriculum. Learning from home has tons of challenges, including disorganization and failing to meet learning schedules. To help your kids navigate appropriately in and out of the virtual/home-based learning here are 5 tips to help you make the most out of your home-school learning environment…

1) Create a learning space…

While learning from home is fun, it can be messy and full of chaos, especially when there is no designated place where the learning activities can take place. Considering that living and learning in the same space can lead to quick disorganization, parents need to delegate a space specifically for learning (a learning hub in the home). The space should be in a quiet room, probably one that receives less traffic from the other members of your household. A room with a desk and chair, a few wall shelves and good lighting  is all you need for a learning hub.

In the learning space, you should arrange all the learning materials that your child needs. It’s also worth teaching your children to respect the workplace (just as they would their classroom at school) For example, they should understand that they are supposed to return the learning materials to their designated place once they are done using them.

2) Make and follow a daily schedule…

To keep your children on the right track and ensure that they make yielding learning strides, you must develop a clear structure of all their learning activities. Ensure that you create a daily schedule to guide your children’s daily activities and help them focus on crucial tasks each day.

For your kids to effortlessly resonate with the daily schedule, you should consider doing the following…

• Colour-code the schedule by subject, type of activity, time and day
• If you have two or more children, consider aligning their schedules using swimlane diagrams (a schedule with several rows and columns indicating the role of each child at a particular time)
• Create a simple flow-chart schedule indicating when your kids can take a break or have screen time.

3) Set learning goals…

For any activity to be successful there must be goals and objectives that must be completed. By understanding your kids’ age and abilities, state and national requirements, you should set sound learning objectives for them. You can work with your child when doing this to help them grow their goal- building skills.

4) Look for learning opportunities beyond the textbooks…

As mentioned above, learning at home is highly a flexible process and you can leverage tons of learning opportunities that this learning environment comes with. You should be open to include activities such as playing board games, writing emails to friends and family and cooking various meals in your daily schedule, Incorporating these activities will create an all-rounded curriculum for your child.

5) Make learning a fun family activity…

Home-based learning should not be left entirely to the kids. Instead, the learning activities should be something that everybody in the family should enjoy doing. There are lots of ways you can involve the family in the learning activities.
